Stream-Prince-East Ridge Hike

Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park is such a treat and, other than hearing the occasional airplane pass overhead, I’d never know we were so close to Oakland. Make sure to grab a map or take some photos of the one available online before you go. If you find you have plenty of time to spare, you may do more miles than you originally intended! We did a loop from the Skyline Gate Staging Area (8490 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, CA 94611) that was approximately 3 miles.

Why we love it: Two words: redwood forest. Old growth, new growth, doesn’t matter. There’s something magical about staring up at their great heights. Throw in a creek, winding trails, and views along the ridge and that’s one happy family hike.

For the Young Ones (0-10): Little Miss loved pointing out the letters of the alphabet she saw in the branches and counting the many many dogs taking a walk.

For the Big Kids (10+): This loop has plenty of variety to keep it interesting without being a challenge. (Little Miss hiked the entire thing herself.)

Keep in Mind:

  • It can be quite muddy after a rain, so wear appropriate shoes.
  • There are lots of dogs off leash, so if that makes you uncomfortable this may not be the best park for you.
  • Skyline Gate Staging Area’s parking lot is small and fills up REALLY early on weekends. You can park along the street or make your own hike starting from the main entrance.

Around the Area: You’re so close to Oakland, there are plenty of great eats! We picked up tasty sandwiches at The Fifth Quarter Charcuterie. I highly recommend the meatball, served on fresh bread from Acme Bread Company!

Difficulty Level: Easy/Easy-Moderate
